Pop culture and trends

My background in newsrooms has led me to be a writer and an editor who can think five steps ahead while simultaneously focusing on the present. What is topical? Timely? Can be reasonably executed in the next hour? Below are examples of work I commissioned or created that identifies or reacts to present trends in both pop culture and within the HGTV and Travel Channel fan communities. 

Commentary editing

In addition to my duties as Social Media Manager at RedEye Chicago, I also co-managed the daily newspaper's commentary section, recruiting new columnists and developing content plans for topical and timely columns. At HGTV and Travel Channel, I commissioned similar pieces about our shows that dipped into humor and commentary waters. 

Long-form feature writing

Peter Holderness produced the incredible short documentary "Brave in Chiraq" for TouchVision about one youth group's efforts to curb violence in the city of Chicago. I worked with him on ideas for web and social presentation, which included a lengthy text piece component that I researched, wrote and built the website page for.

As producer of the TouchVision documentary "My Quarter-Life Cancer," I conducted interviews with our subject, Brianna Wellen, and wrote three long-form features to complement each chapter of the documentary (see "Video Production" for more on the documentary).*
